White Robe March 4, 2006

A song I heard long ago by the White Sisters (a family group whom I have been unable to track down in the 20+ years since they visited my church).
What makes a dying saint lift up his hand? and thank God for all the years he was able to stand. and with a weary sigh, a far away look in his eye, he begins to say this prayer, as if he’s almost there.
Lord, put a white robe around me, and give me a crown to wear. Let me take your hand, let me understand, it’s forever, and lead me to my promised land.
good song…i tried to give it a tune, but it kept sounding like a cross between dixie and comfortably numb…
i forgot to tell you, i tried get it right so many times, i now know the word by heart….and am glad i do…
the faithful met tonight for bible study…the oldest member is a dear friend of mine that i have known for a long time…well, it might not seem that long to him as he is in his eighties. he taught on death…it was disturbing at first because his heath is fading and it will not be the same after he is gone(we can all see it coming)…. as he taught, it wasn’t deep and heavy, but light and joyful…full of wisdom that few have achieved, and he spoke of the celebration believers should have when one of us graduates. i sat there wondering, how? how could i celebrate the loss of a friend and one superior to me in many things but still insist i speak first and last?…one who taught me so much…who stood by me even when i failed…
i looked at his chair and wondered what it will be like when he is no longer there to fill it…i thought of this song…his job is almost done, his race is almost ran…he can almost see the promised land…i saw my own selfishness…wanting to hold him here for me…
p.s. that is supposed to say i know the words by heart…refering to the song…
Does anyone know where I can get the record or record album or words to Lord, put a white robe around me, and give me a crown to wear. Let me take your hand, let me understand, it’s forever, and lead me to my promised land. Is there a song book that it may be in. I know the chords to the chorus but do know know what song it came from.
I think the Downings or Gaithers have sung it on one of their albums.
Also, there is a song that has these words in it: I really don’t mind being a blind man for God is the next thing I’ll see. I was sung by a bass singer. I think this song was on the same album that the above-mentioned song was on.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
